UNSC unanimously adopt resolution to cut-off supply of funds to IS group




United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted resolution cut off supply of revenue flows to Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Decision in this regard was taken at the first-ever meeting of finance ministers of 15 member states to support a diplomatic push to end the war in Syria.
 
Points to note
  • The resolution has been drafted by United States and Russia, calls on governments to ensure that they have adopted laws to make the financing of IS a serious criminal offence.
  • It also calls for enhanced actions against from closing financial system loopholes to stopping the abuse of charitable causes.
  • It stressed that already existing resolution mandating member states to ensure that financial assets are not transferred to terrorists by persons within their territory.
  • Called for increased international cooperation in sharing information and closer collaboration with the private sector to identify suspect transactions.
The UNSC also called on Member States to promote enhanced vigilance by persons within their jurisdiction to detect any diversion of explosives, raw materials and components that can be used to manufacture improvised explosive devices or unconventional weapons.

UNSC unanimously resolution adopts to prevent further IS other terrorist groups attacks

 
 
 
 
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution here on Friday, calling on all countries to coordinate efforts to prevent further terrorist attacks by the Islamic State (IS) and similar groups.
The resolution has been not drafted under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter which empowers UN to give a green signal to the use of force.
 
The French-sponsored resolution has
  • Urged UN member-states to intensify their efforts to stem the flow of foreign terrorist fighters in Iraq and Syria.
  • Also called upon member-states to prevent and suppress the financing on terrorism groups and other extremist groups.
  • Mentions ISIS group constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security and expresses its determination to combat it by all means.
It should be noted that this is the 14th terrorism-related resolution adopted by the UNSC since 1999.
Background
The resolution was adopted by UNSC a week after ISIS extremists had launched a coordinated barbaric gun and bomb assault in Paris (France) on 13 November 2015 which had killed 130 people.
ISIS also has claimed responsibility for twin suicide bombings in Beirut (Lebanon) which had killed 43 people and for bombing of Russian airliner which was crashed over Egypt’s Sinai peninsula killing all 224 people on board.

UNSC adopts resolution to allow EU countries to use force to tackle Refugee Crisis

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a resolution authorizing the European Union (EU) and individual countries to use force to tackle the worst refugee crisis.
The EU-proposed resolution was supported by majority vote of fourteen council members of total 15 including all 5 permanent members. Venezuela remained abstain from voting.

Key facts
  • The resolution allows European naval forces to board ships for inspecting, seizing and destroying vessels smuggling migrants and refugees on the high seas.
