24th edition of New Delhi World Book Fair begins

The 24th edition of New Delhi World Book Fair began at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. It was inaugurated by Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani.
This year the theme of fair is “Vivid Bharat – Diverse India” based on Cultural Heritage of India. China has been accorded the Guest of Honour Country status for this edition of fair.
The message of India-China partnership for the New Delhi Book Fair 2016 is “Renaissance of Civilizations- Understanding through exchanges“.
Points to Note
- The nine-day fair, touted as the largest in Asia, is hosting about 30 countries in which a series of programmes including panel discussions, dramas, classical and folk dances, workshops, discussions, authors’ meets, conferences, seminars and cultural programmes will be held.
- Event has been organised by National Book Trust (NBT), an apex body of the under the Union HRD Ministry and India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) is the Co-organizer.
- Over 1,000 titles in major Indian languages on language, philosophy and literature from ancient to contemporary times are on display
- Besides, the fair is also hosting many publishing and literary conferences, emerging new voices in Indian writing as well as special programmes for children and youth.
The New Delhi Book Fair is India’s oldest book fair organized annually at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The 1st Delhi Book Fair Was held in March 1972 and was inaugurated by then President of India VV Giri.

DTC to conduct trial of e-ticketing machines in buses

Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will introduce e-ticketing machines in some of its buses on a trial basis from January 2016. Transport Minister Rai said that after installing ETMs in all buses by April -May next year, the government will move towards common mobility cards for travelling in both DTC and Metro, which will be done on priority basis. DTC will charge fares from passengers through ETMs in some of its buses on a trial-basis.
What is Car Free Day?
On November 22, the transport department had organised Car-Free Day in Dwarka area. During the event, Kejriwal had announced that Car-Free Day will be organised across the national capital and he would also cycle to his office that day.

Government inaugurate Indian Police Foundation and Indian Police Institute in New Delhi

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Indian Police Foundation (IPF) and Indian Police Institute (IPI) in New Delhi.
Both agencies aim at embarking a culture of research and evidence-based policing in India. It also seeks to subjectivity avoid personal errors and biases in decision-making.
They have been set up and registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 as an All India Society.

First car-free day observed in Delhi

First Car-Free Day was observed in Delhi on 22 October 2015 to encourage the people to use public transport instead of using their cars.It was observed from 7 AM till 12 noon on the stretch connecting Red Fort to India Gate via Delhi Gate and ITO.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took part to observe this day by taking part in a cycle rally. DTC also had deployed additional buses with frequency of one or two minutes on this route for better facilitation of commuters.
