UNSC unanimously adopt resolution to cut-off supply of funds to IS group




United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted resolution cut off supply of revenue flows to Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Decision in this regard was taken at the first-ever meeting of finance ministers of 15 member states to support a diplomatic push to end the war in Syria.
 
Points to note
  • The resolution has been drafted by United States and Russia, calls on governments to ensure that they have adopted laws to make the financing of IS a serious criminal offence.
  • It also calls for enhanced actions against from closing financial system loopholes to stopping the abuse of charitable causes.
  • It stressed that already existing resolution mandating member states to ensure that financial assets are not transferred to terrorists by persons within their territory.
  • Called for increased international cooperation in sharing information and closer collaboration with the private sector to identify suspect transactions.
The UNSC also called on Member States to promote enhanced vigilance by persons within their jurisdiction to detect any diversion of explosives, raw materials and components that can be used to manufacture improvised explosive devices or unconventional weapons.

Russia imposes economic sanctions against Turkey

Russia has imposed economic sanctions against Turkey, a NATO member over the issue of shot down a Russian Sukhoi 24 warplane on the Syrian border.
In this regard, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree adopting a series of retaliatory economic measures against Turkey with an effect from 1st January 2016.

  • Ban on imports from Turkey, work of Turkish companies in Russia and any Turkish nationals working for Russian companies.
  • End to charter flights between the countries and urges Russian tour operators to refrain from selling tourist packages to Turkey.
Background
  • NATO member Turkey on 24th November 2015 had shot down Russian Sukhoi 24 warplane escalating crisis in bilateral relations of both countries.
  • Turkey President Erdogan has said Turkey will not apologize for downing the jet, saying Ankara was fully within its rights to defend its air space.
  • Russia has furiously denied the claims and demanded an apology and economic compensation from Turkey.

Russia, US ink MoU to avoid deconfliction between their air forces over Syrian skies

Russia and United States have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to avoid deconfliction and mid-air incidents between their air forces over Syrian skies.
The MoU seeks to avoid direct clashes between both air forces in the skies over Syria. It also includes steps to be taken by pilots to avoid an inadvertent clash over Syria.
 
 
Key facts
  • The text of the MoU has not been disclosed and remained secret but it has laid out means and protocols for both sides to communicate and establish a hotline on the ground.

IS militants blows up Palmyra’s iconic Arc of Triumph

Islamic State (IS) militants have blown up the iconic Arch of Triumph in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.
Arch of Triumph was a centrepiece of the UNESCO world heritage site of ancient ruins of Palmyra. It dated between 193 and 211 AD.

  • After seizing the ancient city of Palmyra in May 2015, IS militants have demolished several ancient temples as part of their sustained campaign of destruction of heritage sites (or cultural cleansing).
