German Chancellor Angela Merkel named 2015 Time’s Person of the Year

She was named for her role in Europe’s crises over migration and Greek debt as she had provided steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply.
Merkel is the first individual woman to receive the “Person of the Year” recognition since TIME changed its title from “Man of the Year” in 1999.
Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named runner-up and US Presidential hopeful Donald Trump was placed .
About Angela Merkel
Angela Merkel (full name- Angela Dorothea Kasner) was born on 17 July 1954 in Hamburg, West Germany.
She is trained as a physicist and had entered politics after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.
In 2005 national elections, Merkel became Germany’s first female chancellor, and one of the leading figures of the European Union.
Prior to entering into politics, she was working as research scientist. She was elected as first women Chancellor of Germany in 2005 and since then is in office.
Time Magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ title
It is an annual honour that has been bestowed by the magazine. It was started in 1927. Every year it is announced in the month of December. It is given to person who is most influenced in the news during the year and is chosen for better or worse cases in the news.

German cabinet approves military mandate to fight Islamic State in Syria

The German Cabinet has approved a mandate offering military assistance to fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group in Syria.
Germany decided to join the fight against IS after an appeal by French President Francois Hollande in the wake of the 13 November Paris attacks. Its forces will not engage in combat. MPs are expected to back the mission, which would become Germany’s biggest current military operation abroad.
Points to note
- The German mission will include sending Tornado reconnaissance jets, a refuelling aircraft and a frigate for one year and can be extended by year.
- Tornado reconnaissance aircraft, a naval frigate and a 1,200-strong force will be sent to the region under the proposals
- These aircrafts can take high-resolution photos and infrared images at night and in bad weather and the tanker aircraft for refuelling of planes in mid-air.
- A German frigate will help to protect the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Vijay Keshav Gokhale appointed as India’s ambassador to China

He will replace Ashok Kantha, who was appointed as envoy to China in January 2014 for a two-year term i.e. till January 2016.
Currently, Mr.Gokhale is serving as the India’s Ambassador to Germany. He is a 1981 batch India Foreign Service (IFS) officer.
Prior, to his appointment as India’s top envoy to Germany, he had served at different Indian missions including in Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing and New York.
Mr.Gokhale also had held the posts of director (China and East Asia) and joint secretary (East Asia) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) headquarters in New Delhi, . He is known to be one of the most knowledgeable Indian diplomat who is well versed with international affairs of China.

Germany celebrates 25 years of unity

Germany celebrated 25 years of reunification on 3 October 2015 marking the day in 1990 when communist East Germany and capitalist West Germany reunited country.
On this occasion of silver jubilee celebration, Germany has organised a street party at the Brandenburg Gate as the symbol of German unity.
Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck also attended the ceremonies in the business capital Frankfurt with the resonant slogan overcoming borders.
Both of the leaders had grown up in East Germany and Merkel was a scientist in East Germany, while Gauck was a pastor and a pro-democracy activist.
Currently the re-unified Germany has emerged as a leader and economic powerhouse of Europe.
Background
On 3 October 1990, Unification Treaty came into effect uniting two halves together of then divided Germany. Since then this date is marked as Germany’s national day.
This treaty came into effect one year after the fall of Berlin Wall which had separated the capital city into two parts comprising communist East Berlin and democratic West Berlin in Germany from 1961 to 1989.

India to Chair G20 in 2018

India is going to chair Group of Twenty (G20) nations forum in year 2018 and New Delhi could be the host of the prestigious annual G20 summit.
This decision was taken by G20 forum earlier in September 2015 which was chaired by Turkey.
Turkey will hand over the Chair for the next year i.e. 2016 to China and in 2017 Germany is going to chair it.
About Group of Twenty (G20)
- G20 is the premier forum (It is not an organsation) for global economic and financial cooperation.
- Being a forum it does not have any permanent secretariat or management and administrative structure.

G-4 countries issue Joint Statement on UNSC Reforms

G-4 countries viz Brazil, Germany, India and Japan have issued a Joint Statement on United Nations Security Council Reforms (UNSC).
It was issued after G-4 meeting held in New York,US which was called by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.
G-4 leaders in meeting
- Stressed on more legitimate, representative and effective UNSC reforms to address the global conflicts and crises which have spiralled in recent years.
- Shared the view that global conflicts and crises of the international community in the 21st century which can be solved by more Member States representing UNSC.
