Gurdeep Singh appointed as CMD of NTPC

NTPCGovernment of India has appointed Gurdeep Singh, currently head of Gujarat State Electricity Corp, as the chairman and managing director of NTPC Ltd, India’s biggest power producer.
His appointment was confirmed by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He has been appointed through a search committee route and became the first person to be appointed to the top job at a Maharatna company through this way.



About Gurdeep Singh

  • Prior to this appointment he was serving as the managing director (MD) of Gujarat State Electricity Company Limited (GESC).
  • He had spearheaded several key reforms during his tenure at GESC, Singh including innovative solar power programmes such as the solar power plant over the Sardar Sarovar canal
  • He had started his career in NTPC in 1987 and earlier had worked with Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, IDFC Projects and Powergen in different capacities.

Arun Kumar Jain appointed as Chairman of CBDT


Senior revenue service officer Arun Kumar Jain appointed Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
The appointment has been also approved by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

About Arun Kumar Jain
  • Mr Jain is Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer of a 1978 batch.
  • Prior to this appointment he was serving as acting Chairman of the board following superannuation of Anita Kapur on November 30, 2015.
  • He will have short tenure of two months as Chairman of CBDT till January 2016.
  • Presently, he is also holding additional charge of Member (Personnel and Vigilance) in the CBDT.

About Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)

CBDT is apex policy making body of Income Tax department in India and is the supreme body for framing policies related to direct taxes. It is a statutory authority established under The Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963. The composition of CBDT includes Chairman and six members.

Subir Gokaran appointed as Executive Director of IMF

Renowned economist Subir Gokaran has been appointed as an Executive Director on the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Mr. Gokarn’s name was cleared by Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will replace Rakesh Mohan whose 3 year tenure ends in November 2015.
He will represent grouping of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan on the IMF’s Executive Board with a total casting vote of 2.8 per cent of which India has more than 2.3 per cent.
Earlier he had served as Deputy Governor of RBI from 2009 to 2012 and was the youngest Deputy Governors of the central bank at that time. He also had served as a nominee Board Member of the State Bank of India (SBI).

Executive Board of IMF

  • The Executive Board of IMF is based in Washington and is responsible for conducting the day-to-day business of it.
  • Composition: The board comprises 24 Directors, who are appointed or elected by groups of countries or by member countries.
  • It is headed by the Managing Director (MD) who serves as its Chairman.
  • Functions: The Executive Board meets several times in each week and carries out its work largely on the basis of papers prepared by IMF management and staff.

Najib Shah appointed as Chairman of CBEC

Najib ShahSenior IRS officer Najib Shah has been appointed as Chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), apex body on Indirect Taxes. His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC).
 
He will have tenure of 2 years i.e. till March 2017, when he attains the age of superannuation 60 years. He was serving as acting Chairman of the board after retirement of Kaushal Srivastava in July 2015.
Mr Shah is Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) officer of 1979 batch. Prior to this appointment he was working as Member in the CBEC board since May 2015. Earlier, he had served as Director General of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

About Central Board of Excise and Custom (CBEC)

  • CBEC is the nodal government agency on Indirect Taxes responsible for administering Customs, Central Excise, Service Tax and Narcotics in India.
  • Established in 1855 by the then British Governor General of India as Customs & Central Excise department. Thus, it is one of the oldest government departments of India.
  • Currently it operates and functions under the aegis of the Department of Revenue of Union Ministry of Finance.
